CPD14 Kundalini Meditations – Naad Yoga, Sound Healing & Mantra

A Continuing Professional Development Specialty Intensive

Kundalini yoga is a Naad Yoga, which means that it uses sound (mantra) as one of its main tools for transformation. The sound of the mantra can help to still the mind and open up a space for transcendence. In this way, music and mantra are integral parts of the kundalini yoga practice.

Naad Yoga is a type of Kundalini Yoga that uses sound to raise one’s consciousness. Naad means “sound” in Sanskrit, and yoga means “union.” Naad Yoga uses sound to connect the individual with universal energy. Naad Yoga is also known as the yoga of sound or the sonic yoga.

This module will assist you in understanding Naad Yoga, Sound Healing and Mantra and bring it in your teachings and practice for life.

Here, we outline the valuable research behind these practices below:

Music and sound therapy are some of the most ancient practices performed by human beings. Additionally, prayers and mantras are deeply embedded within our spiritual practices. There is deep wisdom in incorporating music within our culture, especially regarding healing. A growing body of evidence describes music’s benefits to the mind and body. For example, music therapy can be a helpful practice when healing complex trauma developed during childhood (Hussey et al., 2008). Psychotherapy percussion sessions geared toward adolescents have also been shown to lower trait anger, decrease aggression, lower depression, and increase self-esteem (Currie & Startup, 2012). Additionally, rhythmic auditory stimulation is helpful in the rehabilitation after brain injury (Bradt J, Magee WL, Dileo C, Wheeler BL, 2010). These are a few examples of the extensive research conducted in this space. A recent report geared toward military professionals has outlined the enormous amount of research regarding music therapy. It is an incredible resource for anyone wishing to learn more about this topic (American Music Therapy Association, 2014).

There is possibly a connection between the benefits of music therapy and some of the benefits received from kundalini yoga practices that involve mantras. For example, mantra meditation has been shown to reduce pain and the need for pain-relieving drugs in children suffering from painful side effects from a medicine that treats neuroblastoma (Ahmed et al., 2013). On a similar note, a study involving kundalini yoga which incorporated Adi Mantra, showed that cortisol levels would immediately decrease following the practice, and there was a decreased perception of stress expressed by the participants (García-Sesnich et al., 2017). Remember that these studies incorporate mantras within a yoga or meditation practice. Therefore, they do not directly give evidence of the benefits of the mantra themselves, as the benefits may also be derived from the mindfulness practice. Nonetheless, given the research of music therapy in general, these ancient traditions may hold wisdom in enhancing the benefits derived from these yogic practices.

We invite you to join us into the incredible transcendental journey of sound healing.
