“Dadirri” – Inner Deep Listening and Quiet Still Awareness

It has been 5 weeks since I dis-engaged from the daily humdrum of the computer and social media. I switched off my phone almost daily and respected long periods of quiet, still awareness.

We travelled along the East Coast and snorkelled with Turtles, saw Starfish, Manta Ray’s and a plethora of reef fish, amidst the most beautiful ocean waters I have ever seen.

Shockingly, on the most beautiful and secluded beaches, we saw along the way, we found huge amounts of plastic debris and waste. It was troubling, to say the least. As humans, we are the greatest predator to turtles with our plastic bags and waste. Unfortunately, it is estimated that only 1 in 1,000 young turtles will survive to adulthood. Not even our beautiful National Parks are immune to this waste, and without our help cannot sustain the pristine environment our wildlife deserves.

Quietly together, we spent time collecting a variety of plastic: bottle caps, bags, old shoes, thongs, boat debris and even a broom. It felt fulfilling, knowing we left the beach better than we found it.

It occurred to me how wonderful it would be one day to run a silent meditation retreat on our secluded coastlines, silent and mindfully picking up plastic, and appreciating some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet, The Dadirri Way!

Quietly, respectfully and listening deeply,

Celia Roberts
