CPD16 Music Yoga Therapy and Sound Meditation

A Continuing Professional Development Specialty Intensive

Yoga Therapy and Meditation have long used music, sound, mantra and chanting as healing techniques. Research now reveals the neuroscientific benefits of natural sound and music therapy in the yoga and meditation environment.

This three-day intensive will assist the understanding of how to use music, mantra, chanting, silence and the sounds of nature to therapeutically apply to both the classroom environment and private therapy setting from an evidence-based and evidence-informed model.

Learn how to actively support students as they strive to improve their overall health and improve their nervous system health and cognitive, sensory, and motor skills.

The course will explore the value of silence and sound, including the effects of natural bird song on health, natural surrounds, the qualities and effects of sound healing instruments, including crystal and Tibetan singing bowls; chimes and percussion, the frame drum, the wind gong and tuning forks, in addition to binaural beats, room acoustics and different genres of music for health and emotional benefits. In combination with yoga therapy, sound and music therapy explore the neuroscience of sound and how to unlock the inner pharmacy, including targeting specific health conditions.

At BIYOME, we value the importance of music and soundscape in yoga therapy and meditation environment for the following reasons:

  • Yoga, meditation, sound and music therapy also benefit individuals with neurological differences such as developmental disabilities or developmental delay, cerebral palsy, dementia, intellectual disability, neurodevelopmental disorder, autism spectrum disorder and brain injuries.
  • Mindful movement, sound and music therapy combined will therapeutically aid neurological injuries, developmental delay, or degenerative conditions that may cause physical impairments such as coordination, weakness, and motor planning problems.
  • Sound and music meditations for bioplasticity assist in the reduction of pain, cancer recovery, chronic pain conditions, burns debridement and physical rehabilitation.
  • Vedic chanting, singing, mantra and breathwork all improve communication impairments in speech, language or voice. Stuttering and respiratory dysfunction, resulting from neurological damage, neurodevelopmental disorders, developmental delay or intellectual disability, are improved using sound.
  • Music therapy and mindfulness meditation improve cognition, executive functioning, memory and attention.
  • Yoga therapy, meditation and music therapy assist in recovering from grief, loss and bereavement, which may arise from the adjustment to disability or changes in identity resulting from disability, neurological damage, brain injury, dementia, or trauma.
  • Vedic chanting increases telomere length, reversing the ageing process.
  • Singing followed by dancing reveals the most significant increase in endocannabinoids, linked with an average improvement in mood, meaning that we can induce the natural high of the endocannabinoid system through Vedic chanting, dancing meditations, mindful movement and asana, pranayama and meditation (in that order).
  • Music lifts oxytocin levels, giving us a shared common elevated experience and increasing closeness and connection.
  • David Levinson (Your Brain on Music) conducted a research study that compared families who played music together versus those who did not. The study revealed that relationships become more robust when music is played out loud in the same room. People begin to sit a little closer, spend more time together, and intimacy between couples increases by up to 67 per cent. (Source)
