HLL05 BioMedical Yoga Therapy for YogaBrain: The Brain that Changes Itself

Registered 20 hour Higher Level Learning (HLL) Certificate

For centuries yoga has prevailed as a “science of the mind”, and now modern neuroscience is starting to prove its amazing claim. YogaBrain is the integration of body, mind, and nervous system into presence – the basis of a balanced, strong, and resilient nervous system. It has been shown for multiple decades that cultivating mindfulness through awareness, the breath, and active yoga practice can strengthen our tenth cranial nerve, and thus the vagal tone, which untimely has the capacity for a regulated, stable, and resilient central nervous system. Whilst this nerve is crucial in connecting the brain and body, let us take this further…

Senior Teacher & Director of BIYOME, Celia Roberts, often alludes to the underlying feeling that the entire body is our mega-brain in her teachings and demonstrates how the latest research points to this exciting possibility. Celia labels this our YogaBrain and believes it is the key to unlocking your immense power and potential. You can tap into this mega-brain for greater focus, creativity, and enhanced well-being when you know how to practice yoga and meditate effectively.

We will explore all facets of the brain and body with researched-based tools and protocols for enhancing your YogaBrain, including digestion, sleep, immunity, flexibility, concentration & transcendence state of awareness. Please, see below for details of your 4 sessions throughout the weekend.

Join Celia, Swami, and Samantha as they deepen your awareness and knowledge of the vast and impressive world of yoga neuroscience and the nervous system and strengthen & explore your YogaBrain.

BIYOME’s Higher Level Learning can be undertaken as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) with Yoga Australia and may obtain Continuing Education (CE) recognition with Yoga Alliance. The course contact hours, non-contact hours (CPD’s and CE’s), allocated across the two registering yoga bodies do however differ. Please contact us for more information.

BioMedical Yoga Therapy for Brain Neuroplasticity

Time & Date: Saturday 19 October, 9:30am – 1:00pm
Hosted By: Celia Roberts BSc Senior Yoga Teacher and Yoga Therapist

Begin this weekend by attending to and understanding your own visceral states and traits. Learn the basics of how to affect the brain through diverse movement-based therapies such as yoga and seated meditation. Explore how this will assist your brain and bodily health throughout your lifetime and enhance your mindfulness by reducing ‘brain smudging’. In reducing such,  you will learn how to enhance and remap your cortical brain through increasing your proprioceptive sensory experience. You will learn how to affect certain parts of the brain with different yoga, breathing and meditation exercises. For example, we will explore how to increase the size of the hippocampus, involved in memory and learning, using yoga movements to increase brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).

Celia has extensive knowledge of neuroscience in conjunction with psychobiological states and how yoga practice has the capacity to change not only your current physiological and psychological state but also your ability to change these states for your future and create genetic intergenerational change.

You will come to an understanding that the ‘brain is in the body, and the body is in the brain’. We coin this deep understanding of the current mind-body medicine research, “YogaBrain” and refer to the following research:

These Ten Facets of Research for Understanding your YogaBrain are as follows:

  1. The vagus nerve
  2. The heart-brain connection
  3. Heart rate variability (HRV)
  4. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis
  5. The gut-brain axis and
  6. Psychoneuroimmunology
  7. Neuroplasticity and Cortical Re-Mapping
  8. Bioplasticity and The Embodied Brain
  9. Meditation for our DNA, epigenome, telomeres
  10. Meditation’s effects on our Inner Pharmacy

We will be exploring:

  • How the growth grey matter and cortical thickness changes by way of understanding the following neurobiological areas:
    • Amygdala
    • Prefrontal Cortex
    • Hippocampus
    • Anterior Cingulate cortex/gyrus
    • Posterior Cingulate cortex/gyrus
    • Insula
    • Temporal Parietal Junction
    • Thalamus
    • Cerebellum
  • Neuroscience of brain in stress/trauma/PTSD/anxiety/depression/pain versus benefits of meditation on brain
  • How to rectify the brain changes that occur in prolonged periods of stress, anxiety, depression and trauma
  • Specific Yoga Therapy and Breathing Pattern Therapy for Brain stimulation and nervous system health
  • Induction of Salivary Nerve Growth Factor by Yogic Breathing and how to induce flow states through yogic breathing techniques.
  • Exploration of ancient philosophy side by side with modern neuroscience

Unleashing Your YogaBrain – How to unlock the immense power and potential of your Superbrain & body

Time & Date: Sunday 20 October, 9:30am – 1:00pm
Hosted By: Celia Roberts BSc Senior Yoga Teacher and Yoga Therapist

Your Superbrain is the key to unlocking your immense power and potential. When you know how to meditate effectively, you can tap into this Superbrain for greater focus, creativity, and enhanced well-being.

LEARNING POWER
Let us take this one step further. Almost anyone can teach and learn ANYTHING more efficiently. In this morning retreat session, we will consider learning more effectively using the body, balance, and movement (and even failure) with well-researched neuroplasticity & bioplasticity protocols for enhancing learning power!

BRAIN POWER & IMMUNE FUNCTION
Breathwork is a powerful tool for brainpower. When you breathe correctly, you oxygenate your blood and deliver nutrients to your brain. This helps you to think more clearly and improves your concentration. There are science-based breathing and pranayama practices that assist focus and help you make better decisions, and augment your super immunity.

STRETCHING & FLEXIBILITY
Stretching helps to improve flexibility, but there are practical, well-researched tools that make a difference and make your body flexible and faster!
This is important for a healthy body and mind. When you are flexible, you can move more freely and easily, which reduces stress and tension. Exercise suggestions for better overall performance will be offered.

SLEEP EFFICIENCY
Yoga Therapy and meditation are excellent ways to improve sleep. You can ease into a deeper sleep when you practice yoga and pranayama, specifically for relaxation. Expert meditators are proven to produce more melatonin when meditating just before bedtime. Specific meditations and breathing exercises help to regulate the body’s natural sleep rhythms and melatonin production, so you can get the most restful sleep possible.

DIGESTION
Breathing for digestion and better immunity is another way to use the Superbrain. When you breathe deeply, you massage your internal organs and help them to function more efficiently. Your thoughts shape your digestion, and we shall explore how to use your mind to maintain a steady weight.
Yoga exercises and breathing practices allow your body to better absorb nutrients and fight off illness. This assists your mental digestion.

TRANSCENDENCE
Transcending the limitations of mind and body is the ultimate goal of yoga and meditation. When you reach this state, you are free from the boundaries of your physical form, and we have well-researched meditations that do just this.

Join BIYOME over our fascinating weekend retreat to learn how to tap into your Superbrain for unlimited creativity, focus, and well-being.

What we shall explore:

  • Optimise Your Learning & Creativity with Research
  • Using Failures, Movement & Balance to Learn Faster
  • Understand & Improve Memory Using Research
  • Learn ANYTHING More Effectively
  • Science-based Breathing and Pranayama Practices to assist Your Focus
  • Stretching & Exercise for Optimal Performance
  • Sleep Efficiency
  • How Your Thoughts Shape Your Digestion
  • Evidence-informed Meditations for Transcendence

Rewiring the Nervous system through Gentle Yoga Asana & Yoga Nidra

Time & Date: Sunday 20 October, 1:45pm – 4:45pm
Hosted By: Swami Mukti, Satyananda Yoga

This is a wonderful afternoon of training the nervous system, mind and body with the revered, Swami Muktibhodhananda. You will experience gentle asana and meditation techniques such as Yoga Nidra, Trataka, Antar Mouna, Mantra with mudras (hand gestures and locks).

Together we explore positive intention through the notion of the sankalpa in relation to neurobiological change based in pattern formation. With an intuitive heart sankalpa, we have the power to create new Nava Sharira Samskara (physical patterns) as well as new Nava Manas Samskara (mental patterns). Not only does this process of intentionally forming new physical and mental patterns directly relate to neuroplasticity and the formation of new physical and mental synaptic connections through repeated experiences, but so too of the process of abhyâsa and vairâgya (Sutra 1.12 – 1.16).

We will be exploring:

  • How to use Sankalpa with Neuroplasticity
  • Notions that reflect the adaptive methodology of the embodied brain to facilitate optimal well-being.
  • Antar Mouna for the Mind
  • Trataka for one-pointed attention
  • Yoga Nidra for deep awareness
  • Gentle yoga posturing and Mudra for subtle energetic change
