Support Clients with Body-Based, Medicare-Compatible Approaches

Are you a registered mental health professional ready to expand your scope of care?

If you’re looking to:

  • Move beyond traditional talk therapy
  • Incorporate yoga, breathwork, and somatic practices into clinical sessions
  • Offer these tools legally under Medicare or private health insurance
  • Use somatic therapy to support Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy (PAP)

You’re in the right place.

Medicare Rebates for Yoga-Informed Therapy: What You Need to Know

Yoga and meditation classes are not claimable under Medicare.
However, **yoga-informed therapy is—**when integrated into sessions by an eligible provider under a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP).

To offer this legally:

  • You must be a registered mental health professional (psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, or occupational therapist)
  • You must be trained in yoga or somatic practices
  • Sessions must meet Medicare’s clinical and psychological criteria

This means you can integrate evidence-based tools like mindful movement, breathwork, and somatic awareness into your therapy sessions—and bill them under standard MHTP item numbers.

Medicare Rebates for 6-Week Group Therapy Programs

An Additional Opportunity for BIYOME Graduates

BIYOME graduates who are registered mental health professionals—psychologists, mental health social workers, psychotherapists, doctors, or occupational therapists—may also offer Medicare-rebatable 6–10 session group therapy programs under the Better Access initiative.

Eligibility & Process for Group Rebates:

To claim Medicare rebates for a group therapy program, your client will need:

  1. A Mental Health Treatment Plan that includes group psychological therapy
  2. A written referral letter from their GP or psychiatrist, specifying referral for 6-10 sessions of GROUP psychological therapy (dated before the start of the program)

How to Support Clients Accessing Group Rebates:

  1. Encourage your client to book a long appointment with their GP
  2. Ask them to bring a printed GP referral template and request:
    • An MHTP that includes group therapy
    • A referral to a Medicare-registered mental health professional (e.g., yourself)
  3. Ensure documentation is completed prior to the first group session
  4. Only attended sessions are eligible for Medicare rebates
  5. At the end of the course:
    • Provide a detailed attendance-based receipt
    • Submit a brief report to the GP after session one and again after course completion
    • Ask the client to complete a feedback form to support this process

For more information, clients can contact Medicare directly on 132 011.

This group rebate pathway is an ideal model for BIYOME graduates running structured 6-week clinical group programs that integrate yoga, mindfulness, and somatic therapy.

Yoga & Private Health Insurance: New Benefits for Clients

In 2024, the Australian Government reinstated yoga as a claimable service under private health insurance.
Why? Because the evidence now confirms yoga:

  • Enhances emotional well-being
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Reduces symptoms of anxiety, depression, and back pain

This shift reflects growing national support for evidence-based complementary therapies in clinical settings.

Somatic Therapy in Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy (PAP)

Somatic tools are now recognised as essential during both preparation and integration phases of PAP. When used by an appropriately trained mental health professional, these practices can also be delivered under Medicare.

By integrating practices like yoga, meditation, and nervous system regulation into PAP, you help clients:

  • Deepen emotional processing
  • Build body-based resilience
  • Experience more continuity of care

To be eligible:

  • Your sessions must remain psychologically focused
  • You must meet MHTP requirements
  • You must be trained in somatic practices
