Meet Calean Kurwen – Yoga Teacher Training Brisbane Graduate

Yoga Teacher Training has given me a deeper understanding of my own body as well as how to work with others.

Celia’s knowledge is second to none and totally mind blowing. Becoming a qualified Yoga Teacher meant I was able to quit my high stress corporate job to teach and work part time from home. I met some awesome, life time friends through my training and use what I learned every day.

Calean Kurwen, 2018 graduate

We recently began speaking to some of our past, present and future yoga and meditation teacher training students.  This week we were privileged to catch up with Calean and to ask her a few questions about her journey this far.

What has yoga teacher training offered you?
Has it effected your personal life in a beneficial way?

Yoga Teacher Training has given me a deeper understanding of my own body as well as how to adjust others. I feel like I can safely suggest practices for certain ailments or have the ability to research and understand what I find. I loved studying Yoga Psychology and connecting the dots between the Yoga Sutras and modern day problem solving. My training opened my eyes to the vast variety of Yoga styles; I had tried Kundalini Yoga before and thought it wasn’t for me… after one session with Sam turns out I love it! Iyengar never would have taken my fancy but having practiced with Jamie Dent I totally see its place and often come back to Iyengar’s teachings. Celia’s knowledge is second to none and totally mind blowing. Becoming a qualified Yoga Teacher meant I was able to quit my high stress corporate job to teach and work part time from home. I met some awesome, life time friends through my training and use what I learned every day.

What is your interest and forte in teaching yoga and mindfulness?

My love for yoga lies in the flow state that leads to stillness. I am a huge advocate of “less is more” and find the best way to convey this is through Yin and Restorative yoga. I enjoy leading people out of their busy minds and into their bodies. Having battled with mental health issues myself, I found no better treatment than that of yoga and meditation. I was fascinated by the profound effects my practice had on my own life and just knew I had to share the magic with anyone who would listen! Through my training I learned not only the physiological benefits of Yoga but also the benefits of a yogic lifestyle; studying Ayurveda has opened my eyes to a whole new way of living. I hope that my classes leave people feeling more connected and relaxed.

How have you used yoga teacher training to serve your personal community?

Although most of my teaching happens within yoga studios, I have worked with the council to offer free yoga classes in parks and at events as part of Active Brisbane. I was lucky enough to be asked to present at Ronald McDonald house for “r u ok?” day to explain the benefits of mindfulness and meditation as well as give a 10 minute meditation taster session. On an even more personal level, my dad comes to me for regular yoga sessions to work on a knee and back injury! I love the time we get to spend together and that my training has given him the confidence to trust me to guide him through his rehabilitation.

Did you expect to be teaching in the way that you are?
Could you have foreseen where the journey would take you?

As soon as I could – actually BEFORE I was fully qualified, I was teaching on a provisional (200hr) certification. I had such a strong drive to share what I had learned and took my teaching hours up to 7.5 a week within a year of graduating from 200hr. something I never saw coming was the response I had from people attending my classes, conveying they felt what I felt when I attended certain classes…what an honour! I was also lucky enough to present mindfulness/meditation seminars at the council offices and for Ronald McDonald house. To be asked to share something I am so passionate about is a dream. I would never take back the time I spent at Brookfield and would recommend anyone who is thinking about doing any kind of yoga teacher training to absolutely DO IT! If only for yourself, it is so worth it. I never could have foreseen what my training would have done for me and I will always be grateful for making the decision to do it.

Thank you Calean for your time we truly appreciate you sharing your experiences with us!
