In Yoga, we awaken Kundalini, which is stored dormant at the base of the spine. Once the Kundalini becomes erect, it is passed through the navel, and the functions of the internal organs are improved. As a result, when it reaches the pit of the throat, peace of body and mind is experienced.
After this, the practitioner goes into Samadhi. Following this, one begins to see the unlimited past and future. One will be able to see the benefits and pitfalls of their actions and if there is a realisation of how they are causing their suffering, they will cease their pain. Eventually, they will be freed from the cycle of birth, life and death.
When awakened, Kundalini will only stimulate the ailing parts of the body and those parts that are not functioning correctly. The movements are called yogic kriyas that occur involuntarily. For as long as Yoga has been described in the ancient texts and been practised, the Kundalini has caused involuntary postures and body movements. We know these postures today as Ha-tha Yoga. From these natural involuntary movements are derived the practices of Ha-tha Yoga.
We can use the postures to prepare the body for the heightened Kundalini Power and embodiment of this energy. When sitting with another as the Kundalini is awakening, we can notice that a person may be affected by the Kundalini Shakti when the eyes begin flickering or the fingers begin twitching. The chin or mouth may start to wobble or shake gently. A trance-like state begins, and the participant may go very deep and begin to open, unleashing the Kundalini power more strongly.
Swaying, circulating, gyrating of the body, or even fast head or arm movements may begin. An internal energy that starts from the body’s base and moves up the spine, physically moving and shaking the body. Once the Kundalini Shakti takes over, participants may move into natural mudras (hand gestures) and natural Kriyas (postures such as reclining savasana, but even spontaneous headstands). Even the breath or voice may change. The participant may naturally use mantras and bandhas (bodily locks).
People may laugh uncontrollably, sing or weep, which creates deep relief and more vitality in the body. A spontaneous spiritual awakening may occur and take them into different realms of consciousness and prepare them for further spiritual development on their onward journey.
The Kundalini Shakti unveils the light in the soul, releasing past traumas and beliefs that are held in the body, mind and breath.
The life force increases drastically and develops a life of its own. It cleanses the body of the past.
The life force then becomes so dynamic that it can no longer be stopped and thus begins to enlighten the soul.
A teacher with the visionary insight to see one in all will significantly assist students on their spiritual path. A teacher who can also see another as a reflection of Bhraman (the Divine) and themselves, utterly perfect in their inherent nature, will further assist a student on the path to enlightenment.
Remember this: at the end of the day, you are the Master, the teacher and the Guru. The Guru takes shape and form as a reflection of one’s readiness to change, elevate consciousness, and willingness to self-liberate.
You yourself are the teacher and the pupil; you are the Master; you are the guru; you are the leader; you are everything.
—J. Krishnamurti
How do I know if I might be experiencing a Kundalini Awakening?
When kundalini and shakti begin to ascend, we can live our lives with a deeper transcendental awareness and understanding, defined purpose and incredible power. You eventually become free of all the beliefs and patterns that held you so tightly bound in your body and mind, causing suffering. In fact, the whole process is quite miraculous and is charged with inherent beauty, yet it isn’t always easy. You have to really let go and surrender the ego, and sometimes there is pain as you let go of the past stored in the body and mind, even right down to the level of your DNA.

Shakti – The Body Holds the Key
“Through dedicated practice and letting go of the mind and ego, individuals can come into contact with their source energy or Shakti that lies dormant within. It can be activated initially by one’s conscious effort in the initial stages. We begin by connecting with Pure Consciousness, Divinity or Divine Consciousness, Spirit, or Chi. In the Bible, we can see cross references to Spirit flowing from within, often interpreted as flowing from the belly, heart and innermost being. In John 7:38 as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water’.”
